Stay at Renowned British Interior Designer Katharine Pooley Devon
Katharine Pooley has led the complete renovation and interior design for a charming cottage, located in Croyde, the most coveted part of Devon in England.
Situated a stone’s throw from the beach, Katharine Pooley purchased the building in Spring 2018. Initially, this was split into two properties, but returning it to one home and extending up has given the c.1800 building a new lease of life. The village is made up of quaint white lime washed houses with thatched roofs and slate to bring the natural night and open up the flow of the layout.
Katharine Pooley has selected fabrics with a cool coastal colour scheme and using the combinations of blue, aqua and steel grey; the team layered deep and sumptuous upholstery with cashmere throws, New Zealand wool rugs and rope details. In order to create a nautical connection with its location being a stone’s throw from the beach, the base build palette with timeless style is a combination of off white, taupe and grey. The team collected a large slab of light brown limestone, which is rare but practical, and a wide European oak timber floor stained to match with the limestone. The walls in the living, dining and kitchen area are painted with Farrow and Ball Strong White and other walls are painted with the colour Skimming Stone which is complemented by the application of occasional feature wallpapers.
The design brief was to maximise the property’s potential and create a beautiful family home for up to 12 guests. When designing the property, Katharine was inspired by homes she had visited on trips to the Hamptons. With an overall coastal style, the property features an open plan living-dining-kitchen area, a traditionally styled study, four bedrooms including a master bedroom with sumptuous fabrics and, a children’s bedroom. The children’s bedroom has been styled like a yacht with four large single beds and using coastal themed bedding and accessories.
A selection of the stand-out features of Mountain Ash House include the kitchen design by Humphrey Munson, the artwork, most of which was specially commissioned, and the use of bespoke upholstery throughout. To maximise the property’s potential, the entire roof was also replaced to improve ceiling heights on all floors, with underfloor heating installed to ensure comfort during the winter months.
In true Katharine Pooley style, home accessories and furniture were sourced on her trips abroad. For example, outdoor furniture came from New Zealand, furnishings were sourced from antique fairs and the range of home accessories from the Hamptons.
Mountain Ash House is currently available to rent for short-term holiday lets through Airbnb.
