Today Starbucks announced the opening of its first store in Padang, West Sumatra, marking another milestone for the company in Indonesia. This store represents the company’s expansion to 54 cities across the market.
“After much anticipation from our customers in West Sumatra, Starbucks in Indonesia is delighted to open its first store in the city of Padang, and continuing our commitment to bring the Starbucks Experience to more customers, one that truly showcases our passion for some of the best coffees from around the world, while honoring the local culture,” said Anthony McEvoy, leader of PT Sari Coffee Indonesia, the licensee of Starbucks brand in Indonesia.
“As the first Starbucks store in West Sumatra, Starbucks Ahmad Yani Padang is expected to be even closer to customers, providing limitless possibilities for the surrounding community while continuing to provide the best service,” he added.
Inspired by the traditional Minangkabau design
The highly anticipated store offers customers an inviting destination to relax and connect. Located at Jl. Jenderal Ahmad Yani 8 Kp Jao, Padang, Starbucks once again demonstrates its commitment to open an opportunity to grow together with the community to the far west region in Indonesia.
Design-wise, this modern yet culturally mindful store reimagines traditional Minangkabau design elements through a contemporary lens. This store is an expression of community, nature and craftsmanship that inspires and evolves.
The design inspiration itself came from the vernacular of the Rumah Gadang – its linear panels with Minangkabau motifs depicting natural elements like leaves and flowers – reinterpreted in a modern style.
Similar to the important role the Minangkabau women play in their community, the bespoke artwork by local artist Yessi Nur Mulianawati a.k.a. Yessiow, celebrates the Sumatran women who contribute to bringing us the coffee we enjoy and love. The artwork also pays tribute to their dedication while capturing the essence of intimacy within the community.
Starbucks has a long commitment of investing in the communities it serves worldwide. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, Starbucks has expanded to more than 50 cities in Indonesia, with more than 5,500 partners who are proud to wear the green apron.
