The stage is set for an enchanting musical drama titled “MAR” that promises to captivate Jakarta. Inspired by Ismail Marzuki’s timeless masterpieces, the production is also a tribute to the late Arifin Panigoro and Raisis Arifin Panigoro, who were ardent admirers of Marzuki’s work.
Galabby Thahira who will be portraying Aryati in the musical expressed her deep admiration for the maestro, stating, “There are some iconic songs by Ismail Marzuki that I’ve always performed, whether it’s for regular shows or at wedding receptions.” she shared.
Galabby conducted research by listening to the original versions of Ismail Marzuki’s songs before developing them for this musical. She also explored the personal character of Aryati from the perspective of caring for others to make it more grounded. Galabby admitted that she enjoyed all the scenes in this musical.
While Gabriel Harvianto who will play the part of the main character, Mar, expressed his hopes for the younger audience dub Gen Z to be able to appreciate Ismail Marzuki’s works, which he stated were just as cool as other contemporary songs.
“For me, Ismail Marzuki’s songs are so beautiful that they can be compared to standard Jazz compositions,” added Gabriel.
Gabriel revealed how he got his main inspiration to brign to life the character of Mar, which was his late father, who was an Air Force officer in the Indonesian Army. Gabriel recalled his childhood memories of looking at old photos of his father and remembering how he spoke concisely and formally. The final scene of this musical is particularly very memorable for him, as it reminds him of his beloved father.
