Liao Jiaming: Exploring Narratives and Identity Through Art

Liao Jiaming, a Guangdong-born artist (1992), explores the power dynamics within images through various media, including photography, video, installation, and performance. His work delves into themes of identity, gender, and the body, often investigating the gap between reconstructed realities and actual reality. In recent years, he has expanded his focus to include the phenomenological use of technology—such as artificial intelligence—in narratives related to queer and non-human experiences.

Artistic Journey and Exhibitions

Liao’s work has been showcased internationally at prestigious galleries, including Eli Klein Gallery, Tai Kwun Contemporary, and esea contemporary. He has also held solo exhibitions at De Sarthe, RNH Space, and the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre.

As an artist continually pushing boundaries, Liao has received numerous prestigious accolades, including:

  • Emerging Artists Development Grant (2024) from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council
  • Finalist, Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize (2021)
  • Finalist, WMA Master Award (2019)

In 2022, he was commissioned by Videotage to create an artwork exploring Machine Learning, further deepening his artistic exploration of technology.

Education and Influences

Liao earned his M.F.A. in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong (2019) and previously obtained a B.A. in Journalism from Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou (2016). He also participated in the Transcultural Collaboration program at Zurich University of the Arts, which broadened his artistic perspective on a global scale.
